Spinal Manipulation – Usually done by Chiropractor
A spinal manipulation, also called an ‘adjustment’ is a science and an art. It is done by quick thrusting to bring a joint to its limit of motion to ‘unlock’ joint restrictions thereby normalizing joint movement. It is performed by osteopaths and chiropractors.
The adjustment can give pain relief for several reasons:
- release of endorphins
- normalized movement which reduces nociception
- inhibition of pain signal
There is a large body of science and detailed neurological explanations for why the chiropractic adjustment is very effective.
Spinal Manipulation for Back Pain or Neck Pain
Spinal manipulation is very effective in mid-back pain, low back pain and stiffness as well as neck pain and neck stiffness. It must be avoided if the patient has a fracture. The adjustment must be done very carefully and by a skilled chiropractor with experience if the patient has osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis or neck instability.
The Chiropractic Adjustment is Safe
Spinal manipulation performed by a licensed chiropractor is safe, effective and may even improve immunity and other bodily functions.
Chiropractic can also help with disc bulges, disc herniations, facet syndromes and more. If you are not getting relief in 2-3 weeks, it may be a good idea to discuss further testing such as: MRI, CT scan or a referral to a neurologist or orthopedic surgeon.
